He first joined the University in 1957 and held many senior administrative positions there. Prior to arriving in Adelaide, Hurst was a Lecturer at the University of Melbourne (1952 to 1956), which is where he earlier completed his tertiary studies. Throughout his career, Hurst published widely on many aspects of Mathematical Physics and built up an international reputation in the field. He spent many years working as a Visiting Fellow at many international institutes. Hurst was heavily involved with the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Institute of Physics for decades: he was elected Fellow of both organisations.
