He officially retired from the School at the age of eighty-nine and has had a lecture room and the A L Hales Honours Year Scholarships in Geophysics and Geochemistry named in his honour. Prior to this Hales was Director of the Bernard Price Institute of Geophysical Research in South Africa and of the Geoscience Division of the University of Texas, USA. Throughout his career he was involved in many aspects of earth sciences research, including geophysics.
