<biogHist>
<abstract>Anton Hales was Foundation Director (1973) then Emeritus Professor (1978) of the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University. He officially retired from the School at the age of eighty-nine and has had a lecture room and the A L Hales Honours Year Scholarships in Geophysics and Geochemistry named in his honour. Prior to this Hales was Director of the Bernard Price Institute of Geophysical Research in South Africa and of the Geoscience Division of the University of Texas, USA. Throughout his career he was involved in many aspects of earth sciences research, including geophysics. Hales was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa, the Royal Astronomical Society, the American Geophysical Union, and of the Australian Academy of Science.</abstract>
