He worked at the University from 1950 and had a fundamental impact on its inorganic chemistry research and teaching programs. Throughout his career, Freeman was also a regular invited visitor to many overseas institutions. Freeman's main area of research was in biological inorganic chemistry, using both X-ray and neutron crystal structure analysis. He authored over 170 works and served on numerous national and international committees and boards, only some of which are listed below. Freeman was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSChem).
