Clarebrough completed a Bachelor of Metallurgy Engineering (BMetE) at the University of Melbourne and a Master of Engineering Science (MEngSc) at the University of Birmingham in the UK. From 1949 to 1964 he published a number of studies on deformed metals with Max Hargreaves, M.H. Loretto, A.K. Head, D. Michell and G.W. West.
