As a Member of Council of the Australian Research Council and executive Board Member of the Australian government's Business, Industry and Higher Education Round Table he played a leading role in research policy and funding. He was Vice-President of the Australian Academy of Science from 1993 to 1994. Brown was widely recognised for his research in mathematics which ranged widely over harmonic analysis, measure theory, and algebraic geometry.
