He vigorously pursued both throughout his life, learning Latin, ancient Greek, French, Italian and Spanish so he could read all recorded works on these subjects. Always a brilliant student, Daly won a scholarship to St Kevin's and went on to graduate with a MSc from the University of Melbourne. His first job was assisting on a survey in northern Australia, he then worked at the Bureau of Mineral Resources, and BHP as a senior geophysicist and consultant.
