He met Marie Simpson in Liverpool, where they were both working as doctors. Gilbert migrated to Australia in 1912 and was joined by Marie in 1914, the couple marrying on the day of her arrival in Adelaide. Marie joined her husbands practice in Snowtown, South Australia.
