After 16 years in practice roles in Queensland Joan Penridge entered the field of education in the mid 1970s when the profession was in a state of flux. At this time leaders in the profession were engaged in the debate about the preparation of nurses that was to culminate with the transfer of education for nurses from hospital based programs to the tertiary sector. The change was radical and sweeping. It involved the best efforts of educators in the field at the time to develop and deliver appropriate curricula that would prepare nurses to continue to deliver the nursing services on which the community relies. Joan Penridge won the respect and admiration of her colleagues in the various roles and activities which she undertook in preparation for the transfer and its implementation. Joan Penridge's career highlights listed below map her contribution in the field of nurse education; a contribution that won wider recognition with the award of Honorary Doctor of the University Degree, Queensland University of Technology in 1994.
