Eugenie Lumbers is noted for her research in to foetal origins of adult diseases, hypertension, development of control of the circulation, exercise and training, and renal development and function. She has investigated the potential role of gene therapy in treating congenital diseases during fetal development, and whether drugs that modulate the renin-angiotensis system could be useful to treat endometrial cancer. With Brian Morris she discovered prorenin, the protein precursor of renin. In 1974 Lumbers joined the University of New South Wales as senior lecturer in the School of Physiology and Pharmacology, later becoming Professor of Physiology, Head of the School, and Scientia Professor in 1999. For ten years she was a Member of the University's Council. In 2013 she became Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy at the University of Newcastle. Lumbers is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and has served on several of the Academy's National Committees.
