After gaining a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) from the University of Melbourne she was a resident medical officer at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, and the Children's Hospital, Perth. Wilmot was later assistant director, then director, of Maternal, Infant and Pre-School Welfare at the Department of Health, Victoria.
