<biogHist>
<abstract>Mary Meares was a welfare worker in Western Australia. In 1914 she joined the Western Australian division of the British Red Cross Society and served in Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs). She later became Commandant of the No. 507 VAD and Assistant State Controller of the VADs. Meares served overseas as a welfare worker with the British Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) and the British Army. Other roles undertaken by Meares included Director of the Red Cross Hospital Visiting Committee, Honorary Secretary of the Soldiers' Welcome Committee and Assistant Secretary to the Maimed and Limbless Soldiers' Association.</abstract>
