In 1914 she joined the Western Australian division of the British Red Cross Society and served in Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs). She later became Commandant of the No. 507 VAD and Assistant State Controller of the VADs. Meares served overseas as a welfare worker with the British Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) and the British Army.
