Eleanor Stodart graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and then spent several years working in the CSIRO Division of Wildlife Research. She later authored and illustrated many nature and science books for children, including the acclaimed <span style="font-style:italic">'Australian Junior Field Guides'</span> series, campaigned tirelessly for quality science books, took a leading role in the Children's Book Council of Australia, and was editor of the journal <span style="font-style:italic">'Reading Time'</span>. She co-authored - with Lynne Babbage - the booklet <span style="font-style:italic">Good science books for children: an annotated list of selected titles</span> 1989, hosted by the Australian Academy of Science.

Eleanor was also a strong advocate for the Australian environment and was active within the National Parks Association of the ACT, serving as President in 1995-96, and elected a Life Member in 2003.
