He developed a novel procedure of cyclic pre-loading which was used on the piles of the Tasman Bridge at Hobart to solve the problem of excessive deflection under load. Following a series of devastating cyclones in tropical Australia in the early 1970s, he drove the establishment of a successful research program in wind engineering, and then the Cyclone Structural Testing Station in November 1977.
