Sasse's research into the photochemical conversion and storage of solar energy was the first to lead to the identification and prevention of processes that limit the practical performance of systems for the photoreduction of water, culminating in the design of highly efficient systems that employ energy transfer for the production of hydrogen.

Born Berlin, Germany, 18 November 1928. Educated University of Adelaide (BSc (hons) 1954, PhD 1966). Lecturer in Organic Chemistry, University of Adelaide 1956-62, Senior Lecturer in Organic Chemistry 1963-64; Principal Research Officer, CSIRO Division of Coal Research, Sydney 1964-67; transfer to CSIRO Division of Applied Chemistry, following the break-up of the Division of Coal Research 1967-69; Senior Principal Research Scientist, Division of Applied Chemistry 1969-70, Chief Research Scientist from 1972.
