William Sandford was sent to Australia in 1883 by John Lysaght to establish a wire-netting plant in Sydney. In 1886 he became manager of the Eskbank ironworks at Lithgow, which he bough in 1892. He was an unsuccessful businessman and the business was eventually sold to G. & C. Hoskins in 1907.
