They opened a factory in Ballarat in 1870 and in Melbourne in 1873. Rowlands died in 1894, but his company continued until well after World War II, when it was sold to Schweppes. Rowlands also introduced the crown cork seal into Australia.

Born Wales, 1824. Died Sydney, 5 June 1894. Worked in slate quarries; to Melbourne 1852; partnership with Robert Lewis making soda water Ballarat 1854; developed branches in Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle (Lewis retired 1876).
