He was widely known in Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand. He was brought out from London in 1855 to manage the business of H. and E. Youngman, wholesale druggists. In 1863 he went to the goldfields of New Zealand, and was elected to the Provincial Parliament in 1865 in Christchurch, and was mayor of Hokitika in 1868. In 1869 he moved to Dunedin and with T. W. Kempthorne and Mr. Ching purchased the business of H. and E. Youngman, and founded the firm of Kempthorne and Prosser and Co. Ltd. This company later spread to three other major cities in New Zealand. In 1882, he returned to Sydney to assist in floating the Westport Coal Company, and founded in Sydney the firm of E. Prosser and Co., druggists.
