John Davey Norgard, a senior executive with BHP, arranged for Lewis Weeks, one of America's most famous geologists, to visit Australia in 1960 and report on the oil permits held by BHP. His report that oil would be found in Bass Strait led to BHP becoming associated with Esso, a project that within ten years led to the production of 60% of Australia's annual oil needs. Norgard was educated at the South Australian School of Mines and University of Adelaide (BE) and was a Chairman of the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission).
