<abstract>Mark Felton Randolph has been Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Western Australia since 1990. He is also the Director of the University's Special Research Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems. He has found expressions for the response of pile foundations to loading, worked out how soil flows around pipelines, analysed drag anchors and devised new designs for piled raft foundations. He has pioneered geotechnical centrifuge modelling in Australia.</abstract>
<p>Born Sherborne, United Kingdom, 3 July 1951. Educated Universities of Oxford (BA (hons) 1973, MA 1978) and Cambridge (PhD 1978). Scientific Officer, Geotechnics, Building Research Establishment, Watford 1973-75, Higher Scientific Officer, Geotechnics 1975-77; Research Fellow, St John's College, University of Cambridge 1977-78; Teaching Fellow 1978-86, Director of Studies in Engineering 1984-86; Assistant Lecturer, Department of Engineering 1978-83, Lecturer 1983-86; Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Western Australia 1986-89, Associate Professor 1989-90; Professor of Civil Engineering 1990-date. Cooling Prize for young engineers, British Geotechnical Society 1975; British Geotechnical Society Prize, Institution of Civil Engineers, United Kingdom 1982; Fellow, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering 1993; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 2000.</p>
