He has undertaken theoretical research into rheology (the study of the flow of matter) and parallel computing. His work on the stability of torsional flows and cone-and-plate flows has important implications for experimental rheology. His increasing focus on computation has led to a pioneering method of die design. Studies of flagella propulsion, suspension mechanics and bread dough modelling are among his recent achievements.
