He had studied medicine at the University of Melbourne with the hope of specialising in surgery. The onset of progressive profound deafness in in his late teens led him to abandon that dream. He went into general practice in Yarrawonga, Victoria until the late 1960s when he moved back to Melbourne to work in administration in the pharmaceutical industry. His transformation of CSL from a bankrupt government agency to vaible commercial entity set the foundations for the remarkable success of the publically-owned company.
