There he was Professor in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences and Director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) Centre for Astrobiology. Runnegar's particular interests are the phylogeny of molluscs and molecular clock techniques. He was President of the Association of Australasian Palaeontologists from 1984 to 1985, and the inaugural Editor of the Association's journal Alcheringa. Since 1987 he has been a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
