He was Professor of Chemistry at the Australian National University from 1968 to 1977, then becoming Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Ross was a driving force behind establishment of engineering and information technology studies at the University. He was also involved in the establishment of Anutech, the commercial arm of the University.
