His research focuses on boundary integral equations, high dimensional integration and approximation, information-based complexity, multivariate approximation theory, numerical analysis of integral and partial differential equations. He is noted for his work on the superconvergence properties of the so-called Galerkin method. Sloan was appointed to a personal chair in mathematics at the University of New South Wales from 1985, and was Scientia Professor from 1999 to 2004. For the Australian Academy of Science he was a Member of Council from 1995 to 1998 and chaired the National Committee on Mathematics between 1991 and 1997.
