He was Professor of Organic Chemistry from December 1977 until his retirement in 1999. His research interests are in organic chemistry and molecular engineering. Sternhell was best known for his pioneering work on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and its potential to unravel the structures of organic compounds.
