He worked as a storekeeper in the timber business of William and Joseph Fagan 1875-1881 then, due to the influence of Henry Parkes, a lifelong friend, he was appointed Inspector of State Forests in New South Wales 1881-1882. The town of Kendall on the North Coast of New South Wales is named after him.
