<abstract>Jules François de Sales Joubert was chancellor at the French consulate in Sydney 1841-1848. After various moves he settled in 1855 at Hunter's Hill, where he built many stone houses as a contractor, started a ferry service and in 1865 was chairman of directors of the Parramatta River Navigation Company. He was honorary secretary for the Agricultural Society of New South Wales in 1867 and later paid secretary until 1878.</abstract>
<p>Born Angoulême, Charente, France, 31 July 1824. Died Melbourne, 24 August 1907. Educated College Bourbon, Paris. Arrived Sydney in the <span style="font-style:italic">Martha</span> 1839; left Sydney as interpreter in the <span style="font-style:italic">Aube</span>; returned 1841; chancellor, French consulate 1841-48; invested in land and buildings Adelaide 1849-51; Victorian goldfields building government quarters and running a store 1852-53; sailed with a cargo for Madagascar 1853; settled Hunter's Hill 1855, working as a building contractor; started ferry service and in 1865 chairman of directors of the Parramatta River Navigation Co.; declared insolvent 1866; honorary secretary, Agricultural Society of New South Wales 1867, later paid secretary till 1878 and sometime Commissioner; ran exhibitions Perth 1881, Christchurch, New Zealand 1882, Calcutta 1882-83, Dunedin 1889-90, Launceston 1891-92 and Hobart 1894-95; theatrical agent, Melbourne ca 1884-87. First chairman of Hunter's Hill council 1861-62. Chevalier, Legion of Honour, France 1878.</p>
