He made his reputation as a bridge-builder, building such bridges as the William Jolly, Story, and New Victoria bridges in Brisbane, the Northbridge and Iron Cove Bridge, Sydney and the Kings Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue bridges in Canberra. His company was also responsible for the superstructure of the Sydney Opera House, including the sail-like roof.
