Much of his career was spent at the CSIRO Divisions of Physics and Applied Physics, particularly the National Measurement Laboratory. Starting as Research Officer in 1950, he retired as Chief Research Scientist in 1990. His publications included Experimental techniques in low-temperature physics (1960) which ran to four editions and was regarded as a seminal text, and Heat capacity and thermal expansion at low temperature (1999) with T. H. K. Barron.
