Rien Habermehl, when at the Bureau of Mineral Resources, developed a digital computer simulation for the Great Artesian Basin around 1980 and this provided satisfactory data for assessment purposes, planning and management decisions for some of the major aquifers. He later worked for the Australian Geological Survey Organisation and GeoScience Australia. In 2015 he was part of the second Friends of Mound Springs field trip to inspect springs south of Kati-Thanda- Lake Eyre South, South Australia.

A notable publication was:
Habermehl, M.A. and Seidel, G.E. 1979. Groundwater resources of the Great Artesian Basin. In: Hallsworth, E.G. and Woodcock, J.T., (Editors), 1979. Proceedings of the Second Invitation Symposium Land and Water Resources of Australia, Dynamics of utilisation, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences, Sydney, 30 October - 1 November 1978. Australian Academy of Technological Sciences, Melbourne, pp. 71-93

"Dr M. A. (Rien) Habermehl studied geology and hydrogeology at Leiden University, The Netherlands,
with fieldwork areas in the Central Pyrenees, Spain, and artesian springs in Teruel Province, Spain. After his PhD (1970), he joined the Australian Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (BMR), in 1971, at the start of the Great Artesian Basin Hydrogeology Project. BMR became later the Australian Geological Survey Organisation, now Geoscience Australia. He studied the geology, hydrogeology, hydrochemistry and isotope hydrology of the GAB until the mid-late 2010s, including research on flowing artesian springs and their spring deposits, and groundwater and spring deposit ages throughout the basin." [Author Profile: Habermehl, M.A. (Rien) 'Hydrogeological Overview of Springs in the Great Artesian Basin' Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland Springs Special Issue Vol 126, 2020, pp.29-46
