His research focused on the ecology of soil nematodes, and how the structure of soil affected the behaviour and reproduction of plant-parasitic nematodes. He advocated a multi-disciplinary approach to the identification of diseases and the development of strategies to reduce losses caused by disease. Among his publications were books that became required reading: Biology of plant parasitic nematodes (1963) and Nematode ecology and plant disease (1973). In 1963 Wallace migrated to Australia to become Chief Research Scientist at the Glen Osmond (South Australia) research station of the CSIRO Horticulture Research Section (later Division of Horticultural Research). From 1971 to 1989 he was Professor of Plant Pathology at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute in 1971. Wallace was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1975 and served on Council from 1979 to 1981.
