The process involved a catalytic hydrogenation step and a fermentation step. He joined the Colonial Sugar Refining Company (CSR) in Sydney in 1943 with the aim of developing this synthesis process for large scale manufacture of Vitamin C. While at CSR Cortis-Jones became deeply involved in sugar-cane technology. He achieved patents for a type of salicylic acid (1952, jointly with Richard Bosworth), purification of cane-sugar syrups (1966) and retardation of colour development in raw sugar (1970).
