Wynford Connick, who retired from his position as director of DSTO's Aeronautical and Maritime Research Laboratory at Maribyrnong, Victoria, in 1995, was at one stage of his career the leader of an expert team of explosive and propellant scientists. In directing the operations at Maribyrnong he established a business office for the protection and commercialisation of the research results of his teams. He aimed to consolidate the Laboratory's reputation in materials performance and analysis with consequent involvement in investigations into air crashes, bombings and the restoration of cannons from HMS <span style="font-style:italic">Endeavour</span>.
