Such plants attempted to maximise the yield of gas by combining the action of vertical retorts with that of water gas plants which extracted the last vestiges of gas from coke. He achieved an international reputation for his work on this process, and in 1937 was awarded the gold medal by the Institute of Gas Engineers in London for a paper on "The Consolidation of Gas", in which this process was described.
