He also worked in the Department of Physics, University of Sydney on graphical techniques and linkages for computer systems 1936-1939. Following the outbreak of the Second World War, he was requisitioned by the British War Office to aid research into armoured materials, took leave of absence and returned to Great Britain in 1939. He didn't return to Australia, resigning from the University in 1944, to be Chief Research Engineer and later Director with C. A. Parsons, leading the further development of gas turbine engines. He was the author of a number of notable papers, received the Akroyd Stuart award (1935), from the Institution of Marine Engineers, London; and received the Hawksley Gold Medal twice, and the James Clayton Prize (1953) from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London.
