In 1989, he was recognised for his work by being awarded the inaugural Medal in Transport Engineering, by the Institution of Engineers Australia. He was also a pioneer in other areas. After the Second World War, he started his research career at CSIRO, working on the CSIRO Differential Analyser, and in 1952 was appointed as the first Scientific Adviser to the Australian Military Board where he pioneered the early development of operations research.
