Prior to this he worked at ICI Australia, initially in the pesticides section, for nearly twenty years. During some of this time he also taught mathematics at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Baklien was part of the ICI team who developed a quick and simple method of producing tetramisole, an anthelmentic drug.
