<abstract>John Bach was an associate professor in history at the University of Newcastle 1968-1985. He wrote a number of significant books on maritime themes, including <span style="font-style:italic">A Maritime History of Australia</span> (1976), and <span style="font-style:italic">The Australia Station: a history of the Royal Navy in the south west Pacific, 1821 - 1913</span> (1986).</abstract>
