His forte was operational (particularly aviation) meteorology.

Joined the Bureau of Meteorology in 1937 as a clerk and appointed cadet meteorologist in 1939. Served as a weather officer from 1943 to 1964 in Melbourne, Darwin, Townsville and Sydney airports (as officer in charge at the last three). While at Sydney he led the forecasting team in developing JACMAS (a system of providing warnings to aircraft of severe or extreme turbulence in the approach control area of the airport, later known as TAST). Served as Regional Director in Tasmania in 1969 and briefly as Regional Director in Sydney in 1970, before transferring back to Tasmania as Regional Director, 1972-1975.
