<biogHist>
<abstract>Alan Neal worked for the Bureau of Meteorology for 40 years. He was heavily involved with the development of weather satellite and related satellite activities in Australia and internationally (as Chair of the World Meteorological Organization's International Working Group on Satellites). Neal was responsible for the implementation of the Bureau's long standing corporate budget and planning process in the early 1980s, still in use when he retired in 2000 as Assistant Director (Services).</abstract>
<p>Education: BSc, Graduate Diploma in Meteorology, Graduate Diploma in Management. Joined the Bureau of Meteorology as a cadet meteorologist in Sydney in February 1960 and subsequently worked in most states and territories as well as in Antarctica and Papua New Guinea. His career covered the full spectrum of the Bureau's activities, including operational service provision, research and development, technical systems infrastructure, corporate planning, and executive management. Prior to taking up the position of Assistant Director (Services), he held various senior officer appointments including Regional Director (Northern Territory), Head of Program Planning, Coordination and Information, Head of the Weather Satellite Program, and a temporary appointment as Assistant Director (Communications and Computing). Neal was Chair of the World Meteorological Organization's International Working Group on Satellites, and co-chair of the Australia-Japan Joint Committee on Meteorological Satellites and the Australia-China Joint Committee on Meteorological Satellites.</p>
