He worked his way up to Regional Director of South Australia (1980-1984) and was instrumental in the establishment of the Bureau's Australian Capital Territory branch. Mitchell's other achievements and positions include being a member of the Australian Institute of Public Administration in Adelaide; member of the Professional Officers Association; lecturer on synoptic meteorology to final year and honours science students at Flinders University; and participant in many television and radio programs dealing with the weather.
