<abstract>Ian Mason worked for the Bureau of Meteorology and was Regional Director, ACT, 1984-1988, specialising in the field of statistics in forecasting. He introduced the use of numerical probability in public weather forecasts in Australia, and pioneered application of methods from signal detection theory to verification of weather forecasts. He headed secretariats to the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Committee and the Environmental Futures Group in the Commonwealth Department of Administrative Services.</abstract>
<p>Born 22 October 1941. Educated: Adelaide Boys High School; BSc, University of Adelaide, 1962. Diploma of Applied Physics, RMIT, 1963. Joined the Bureau of Meteorology as a cadet meteorologist in 1959. Meteorologist, South Australian Regional Office, Bureau of Meteorology, 1963-1966. Senior Meteorologist, Woomera missile range, South Australia, 1967-1969. Senior Meteorologist, ACT Regional Office, 1969-1984. Visiting Scientist, US National Weather Service, Environmental Research Laboratories, Boulder, Colorado, USA, January 1986 - June 1986. Executive Officer, Canberra Liaison Office, Bureau of Meteorology, July 1988- January 1989. Regional Director, ACT Regional Office, Bureau of Meteorology, October 1984 - June 1988. Visiting Scientist, US National Weather Service Environmental Research Laboratories, Boulder, Colorado, USA, February-March 1989. Director, Genetic Manipulation Advisory Committee secretariat, Commonwealth Department of Administrative Services, April 1989 - April 1991.
