<abstract>George Mackey worked for the Bureau of Meteorology for 44 years (1927-1971) and was Deputy Director, Hobart, 1944-1946, Adelaide, 1947-1948, and Perth, 1949-1971. While working in Perth he was involved in meteorological aspects of flight planning for the first regular passenger flights across the Indian Ocean in the mid 1950s, and was also involved in tropical cyclone warning systems for the north west of Western Australia. Mackey was educated at the Christian Brothers' College in Perth and at the Royal Australian Naval College in Jervis Bay.</abstract>
