<abstract>Douglas Gauntlett worked for the Bureau of Meteorology for 41 years, retiring as Deputy Director (Research &amp; Systems) in 2000, with responsibility for policy and management of the Bureau's complex nation wide technical infrastructure. A large part of his professional career has been focused on meteorological research including a close personal involvement in the development of many of Australia's early numerical weather prediction systems.</abstract>
