<abstract>Rex Falls worked for the Bureau of Meteorology for more than 40 years, and was Regional Director, Northern Territory, 1977-1984, and Regional Director, Queensland, 1985-2000. He was a leading practitioner in the field of tropical meteorology and tropical cyclones.</abstract>
<p>Born 4 February 1941. Educated: BSc, University of Sydney, 1962. Assoc.Dipp.App.Physics (Meteorology), RMIT, 1963. Public Service Medal, 1994. Joined the Bureau of Meteorology as a Cadet Meteorologist in 1959 in the New South Wales Regional Office, and after completion of the meteorologist course in 1963, he was posted to Adelaide and then Darwin, specialising in tropical meteorology. RAAF Butterworth (Malaysia), 1964-1966. Returned to Darwin in 1966 and moved to Brisbane in 1974. Supervising Meteorologist, Queensland Regional Office, 1974-1975. Senior Meteorologist, Northern Territory Regional Office, 1975-1977. Visiting Scientist, US National Hurricane and Experimental Meteorological Laboratory, Miami, 1980. Regional Director, Northern Territory, 1977-1984. Developed the Northern Territory region's climate monitoring bulletin the <span style="font-style:italic">Darwin Tropical Diagnostic Statement</span>, and strongly supported the development of the automated tropical analysis scheme. Regional Director, Queensland Regional Office, 1985-2000. Co-Chair, Queensland Tropical Cyclone Co-ordinating Committee, 1995-2000. Chair, Queensland Flood Warning Consultative Committee, 1990-2000.</p>
