Bell was a widely known and popular figure throughout the Bureau of Meteorology, joining as a trainee meteorological observer in the RAAF, and saw service in New Guinea and the Pacific as a member of the Mobile Meteorological Flight. After a brief post-war return to teaching he rejoined the Bureau in 1947, and subsequently worked at Townsville, Darwin, Essendon, Brisbane Airport and finally in the Brisbane office from 1973 until his retirement.
