For some time he was Lecturer in Banking at the University of Adelaide. Sutton was a keen ornithologist. He served as Assistant Honorary Ornithologist, South Australian Museum 1923-1934 and Honorary Curator in Ornithology 1934-1938, spending every afternoon at the Museum and registering, cataloguing and storing about 15,000 specimens.
