<abstract>John Sutton was a banker by profession, being ; sometime Acting Manager of the National Bank, Adelaide and Inspector in Melbourne until 1917, He then retired and returned to Adelaide. For some time he was Lecturer in Banking at the University of Adelaide. Sutton was a keen ornithologist. He served as Assistant Honorary Ornithologist, South Australian Museum 1923-1934 and Honorary Curator in Ornithology 1934-1938, spending every afternoon at the Museum and registering, cataloguing and storing about 15,000 specimens. Sutton was the longest-serving Honorary Secretary of the South Australian Ornithological Association from 1922 to 1938, and for 11 years served n the Editorial Committee of the Association's <span style="font-style:italic">South Australian ornithologist</span>.</abstract>
