His research interests lie with the ecology of Australian honeyeaters, and with bird conservation and habitat restoration in South Australian woodlands. He has been a strong advocate for environmental restoration around the mouth of the Murray River, and in 2010 published At the end of the River: the Coorong and Lower Lakes. Paton has been involved in a number of habitat restoration and species recovery programs, including those for the Glossy and Red-tailed Cockatoos. He has held executive roles with Birds Australia and in 2007 became a Life Member of the South Australian Ornithological Association. In 1986 with H. A.
