He led the group studying ectoparasites of livestock (1960 - 1977): other major research was on the epidemiology of arbovirus diseases (1977 - 1986). His other interests include Antarctic biology and ornithology, in particular seabirds. Murray was the first regional organiser for New South Wales for the Australian Bird Banding Scheme and was instrumental in setting up the N.S.W. Albatross Study Group (now SOSSA). As President of the Australian Bird Study Association he was largely responsible for the Seabird Island series, which has documented and published reports on over 200 seabird breeding islands off the Australian coast.
