Leo Joseph is an ornithologist whose research interests focus on the evolution and phylogenomics of Australian and neotropical birds, particularly parrots. After working in Uruguay and travelling in South America between 1994 and 1997 he joined the Department of Ornithology at the Academy of Sciences in Philadelphia, where much of John Gould's collection of Australian birds is housed. Joseph returned to Australia in 2005 to become Director of the Australian National Wildlife Collection. In 2009 his book, <span style="font-style:italic">Boom and bust</span>, edited with Libby Robin and Rob Heinsohn, was awarded the Whitley Prize for the Best Australian Natural History Book.
