After working in Uruguay and travelling in South America between 1994 and 1997 he joined the Department of Ornithology at the Academy of Sciences in Philadelphia, where much of John Gould's collection of Australian birds is housed. Joseph returned to Australia in 2005 to become Director of the Australian National Wildlife Collection.
